History

The Hatfield College of Technology was founded in 1952 as the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom. When Hatfield College of Technology established honours degree courses in engineering and technology in 1969, it became Hatfield Polytechnic. Wall Halls and Balls Park Teacher Training Colleges merged in 1976 to establish Hertfordshire College of Higher Education.

In 1984, the Hatfield Campus welcomed over 5000 students and erected a sports hall on its grounds. Hatfield received polytechnic certification from the Council for National Academic Awards in 1988, making it one of just 21 institutions to do so at the time. Hatfield obtained another certification for its research degrees later that year.

The University of Hertfordshire is ranked 71st among British universities founded after 1964, and it remains one of the top 100 universities in the world for students under the age of 50.

In the most recent Research Excellence Framework, 90% of research submissions were declared of global quality, and history was placed first in the United Kingdom for its impact. 57% of submitted research in Hertfordshire's 12 departments was assessed to be of world-leading or internationally excellent quality.

According to the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, the University of Hertfordshire showed the largest improvement in research impact among all universities. (REF 2021).

Student Life

The University of Hertfordshire's Hatfield location is great for students searching for a vibrant social life. Hatfield is an industrial hub, home to Tesco, BT, and Warner Bros. With London only a 25-minute train trip away, students may enjoy the city's hustle and bustle as well as its lively nightlife.

Student Services

The University of Hertfordshire provides a variety of student support programmes to assist students succeed academically and personally. Hertfordshire believes in providing students with a well-balanced environment in which they may both study and have fun.

The Hertfordshire Students' Union (HSU) is the go-to resource for all student-related information and assistance. Every year, HSU organises a variety of amusement activities for students, such as picnics, competitions, movie evenings, scavenger hunts, and so on.

Students can join a variety of student-run organisations and clubs to connect with others who share their interests.

Accommodations

Students can expect to pay between £103 and £217 per week for housing.

All first-year students at the University of Hertfordshire are provided housing. Students can pick from a suite, single, or double room at the cutting-edge lodging facilities. Wifi and bills are included in the room rate. Residence halls are available on both the College Lane and the de Havilland campuses, and students can choose to live on either campus.

Each residence hall has a 24-hour student support service known as the Residential Assistants and the Student Wellbeing team. Students have easy access to all lectures, the library, and Hertfordshire's social spaces, which include a variety of on-site stores and laundries.

Transport

Students at the University of Hertfordshire will find it easy to navigate the campus and the surrounding area. Both sites have accommodations, and students can either walk or cycle to and from campus. There is also a free shuttle bus service that runs between the two campuses to make it easier for students who live on either site.

The university has its own bus service, the UNO bus, which connects to the surrounding suburbs as well as the underground and train terminals that connect to London. The University of Hertfordshire also has a park-and-ride facility with up to 800 parking spaces and bus services between both campuses.

Location

The University of Hertfordshire is located in beautiful countryside, only 25 minutes by train from central London. The University of Hertfordshire's two campuses in Hatfield are only ten minutes away by foot, bike, or shuttle bus. Hatfield, Hertfordshire, is home to over 30,000 people. It has a bevy of bars, including The Forum, a student favourite. Despite its small size, the town square hosts a monthly market as well as a farmers' market.
